JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Covid-19 pandemic continued to grip Indonesia as the country's caseload of infections jumped past the 100,000 mark. The increase comes as the country continues its efforts to get to the New Normal phase.
“The number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia now stands at 100,303, after another 1,525 people tested positive over the past 24 hours,” said Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Wiku Adisasmito in a press briefing on July 27.
“The 100,000 cases is a [tangible] and psychological threshold. It also indicated that [Covid-19] remains Indonesia’s leading health crisis, and so we still have to stay vigilant. The death toll now stands at 4,838 people after an additional 57 people died of Covid-19.”
Wiku added that the number of people recovering from the pandemic now stands at 58,173 people, after 1,518 patients recovered over the past 24 hours. He also noted that the government is caring for 37,292 people who tested positive for Covid-19.
According to the task force’s website http://covid19.go.id, Java is still bearing the brunt of the pandemic. East Java has 20,539 cases or 20.8 percent of all Covid-19 cases. 1,589 people died during the outbreak, while 12,318 recovered from the disease.
Jakarta followed with 19,125 cases. 759 patients died of Covid-19, while 11,886 others recovered.
The Covid-19 task force noted that the uptick in cases also happened in other countries around the world.
“Indonesia is 142nd out of 215 countries around the world, and 28th out of 49 nations in Asia, in the number of cases per 1 million people.”
Indonesia’s 100,000 Covid-19 cases is the ninth highest among all Asian countries. India has the highest number of Covid-19 cases with 1,440,371, followed by Iran with 291,172 patients and Pakistan's 274,289 cases.
