Tourist Arrivals Rose by 228.30 Percent in 2022: Statistics Indonesia

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded a 228.30-percent increase in foreign tourist arrivals from Jan. to Nov. 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

"Cumulatively, from January to November, the number of foreign tourists reached 4.6 million people, an increase of 228.30 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. This shows that foreign tourist visits grew quite high, with a 228.30-percent increase," Head of BPS Margo Yuwono said on Monday, Jan. 2.

He said that in Nov. 2022, some 544.8 thousand foreign tourist visits were recorded through the main entry points, while 112.4 thousand foreign tourists entered through the border gate.

The number of foreign tourist visits through the main entry points decreased by 3.6 percent compared to Oct. 2022. However, the number of visits in Nov. 2022 increased by 336.50 percent compared to Nov. 2021 or on a year-on-year basis.

"Although there was a decrease in November as compared to last month, throughout 2022, starting from April showed that the number of foreign tourists was much better compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of foreign tourists has improved compared to during the pandemic," Margo said.

Based on nationality, most foreign tourist visits in Nov. 2022 were recorded from Singapore, with 99.39 thousand visits, which contributed 15.1 percent, or an increase of 17.65 percent compared to Oct. 2022.

Coming second was Malaysia, with foreign tourist visits reaching 99.38 thousand and a contribution of 15.1 percent, or down 6.63 percent compared to Oct. 2022.

The third-highest number of foreign tourist visits came from Australia, at 79.38 thousand, with a contribution of 12.1 percent, or down 14.64 percent compared to that recorded in Oct. 2022.

In addition, the hotel room occupancy rate (TPK) in Nov. 2022 reached 54.41 percent, up 2.10 percent as compared to Oct. 2022, he said.

"The increase was caused by several factors, such as the implementation of several private and government meeting package activities, national assembly, national MTQ [Quran reading contest], and other events," he said.
