104-Year-Old Indonesian Man Gets His Covid-19 Jab

BOGOR, KOMPAS.com – A 104-year-old man of Sukasari was among hundreds of senior citizens who received the Covid-19 vaccine at Vania Hospital in Bogor, West Java on Tuesday, March 23.

Wirjawan Hardjamulia, who is believed to be the oldest person to have been administered the Covid-19 jab at the hospital, was calm and relaxed as he was vaccinated.

Wirjawan was accompanied by his daughter, Indri, who previously had doubts about the health of her elderly parent. Indri and her other siblings thought that it was unnecessary due to old age.

“At the beginning, we were not sure whether he should get the vaccine due to his old age. But, my father was ready. He wasn’t afraid, he did not doubt as he is in good health,” Indri said.

“Finally, we take our father to get vaccinated so that he can keep healthy during the Covid-19 pandemic at his advanced age.”

She said that her father always thinks positively, eats and rest properly, and most importantly gives thanks to God.

“My father is very disciplined about how he runs his daily activities, starting from exercising, eating, resting, and worshiping at church,” said Indri.

She added her father has his breakfast routinely and likes reading and walking around the house.

Head of Public Relations and Marketing Department at Vania Hospital, Dede Nurhasan Suryadi, said Wirjawan is the oldest person the hospital has vaccinated so far.

Dede hoped that Wirjawan could motivate the community, especially the elderly, to keep their spirits up.

“This could motivate others to get vaccinated because the elderly are quite susceptible to viruses. Vaccination is not dangerous because the purpose of vaccination is to protect the body from being exposed to the virus,” said Dede.

The hospital, he added, is targeting to vaccinate 120 elderly every day. So far, as many as 600 senior citizens have registered with the hospital.
