JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo attended the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU) Commemorative Summit on Wednesday, Dec. 14 in Brussels, Belgium.
Leaders from nine of the 10 ASEAN member states and 27 EU nations joined the meeting on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations.
In his remarks at the summit, President Jokowi stressed that the partnership between ASEAN and the EU countries must be based on equality, and there should be no coercion.
As the current ASEAN chair, Jokowi was one of the six leaders who spoke during the meeting.
“If we want to build a better partnership, that partnership must be based on equality and without coercion,” said Jokowi via the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.
“There can no longer be parties who always dictate and perceive that their standard is better than others,” he said.

For decades, the President added, ASEAN has become an economic powerhouse. Going forward, Southeast Asia will remain a center of growth.
“Thus, the partnership with ASEAN will certainly be profitable,” Jokowi said.
Based on a survey from the EU-ASEAN Business Council in September, some 63 percent of the respondents view ASEAN as the region with the best economic opportunities.
“Meanwhile, 69 percent of the respondents expect the ASEAN market to become more important in terms of global revenue in the next two years. And some 97 percent of respondents expressed hope that negotiation of the ASEAN-EU free trade agreement (FTA) will be accelerated.”
He reiterated the importance of building equal and mutually beneficial partnership.
“From the pandemic and the multidimensional crisis that we are currently facing, we learned an important lesson that to grow and to prosper together is the only option. Not only we have to move forward together, but we also have to move forward equally,” he added.
Bilateral meetings with leaders
On the sidelines of the summit, President Jokowi met Belgian King Philippe Leopold Louis Marie at Laeken Castle in Brussels on Wednesday, Dec. 14.
The President expressed appreciation for a close relations between Indonesia and Belgium for 70 years. Jokowi extended his invitation to King Philippe to visit Indonesia.
“I believe this close relations is an important asset for Indonesia-Belgium partnership in the future,” he said.
During the 30-minute meeting, Jokowi also discussed issues on strengthening cooperation in the areas of economy and climate change.
In addition, Jokowi also met with his Dutch and Swedish counterparts on the sidelines of the summit.
In his meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Jokowi expressed his appreciation for the presence and support of the Netherlands during the recent Indonesia’s G20 presidency. Jokowi hoped that the ASEAN-EU partnership would be further enhanced following Indonesia’s turn to chair the regional bloc next year.
They also discussed issues on the Indonesia-EU CEPA negotiations, energy transition, investment, and overcoming cross-border crime.
Meanwhile, during the bilateral meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Wednesday, the President said that Sweden is one of Indonesia's main economic partners in the Nordic countries, especially in green development.
"I hope this sector will become a priority for cooperation between Indonesia and Sweden in the future," Jokowi said.
The President also said that Indonesia's ASEAN chairmanship next year coincides with Sweden's presidency in the EU in the first half of 2023.
"Let us strengthen the synergy of the ASEAN-EU in promoting equal and mutually beneficial partnership," Jokowi said.
The two leaders also discussed investment, energy transition, and trade cooperation.
Jokowi invited Sweden to participate in the Indo-Pacific Infrastructure Forum in Indonesia next year.
