JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Ghafur Akbar Dharmaputra, Indonesia’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Georgia, and Armenia, passed away on Thursday, May 12, at 9:50 p.m. local time in Medistra Hospital in Jakarta following an illness, the Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed.
“Foreign Minister, Deputy Foreign Minister, and the entire Ministry of Foreign Affairs community are deeply saddened by the passing of Ambassador Ghafur Akbar Dharmaputra,” the ministry’s spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah told Kompas.com on Friday, May 13.
The body of Ambassador Ghafur was laid out in Rumah Emir Firdaus Perumahan Admiralty Kav. B16 Jalan Fatmawati Raya No. 1, Pondok Labu, South Jakarta, according to the official Instagram account of the Indonesian Embassy in Kiev. The family will pray around the body after the Friday prayers.
Faizasyah said that Ghafur was a senior Indonesian diplomat who dedicated his work to the country. Ghafur has evacuated the Indonesian citizens from Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The late Ambassador has played vital roles in helping the evacuation of the Indonesian citizens and safeguarding our national interests during the very challenging times in Ukraine. The late Ambassador continued to carry out his duties with a maximum effort until the last moment,” Faizasyah added.
“I hope he will be in the nicest place with God and God grants his family immense strength during this difficult time,” he added.
Before his ambassadorial post, Ghafur served as a staff expert for the sustainable development division at the Coordinating Economic Affairs Ministry and Consul-general for the Republic of Indonesia in New York.
