JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Muslims in Indonesia will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Monday, May 2 to mark the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
The announcement was made by Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas after an isbat (confirmation) meeting on Sunday, May 1 to determine the first day of Syawal month.
“Based on hisab [astronomical calculations] and rukyat [lunar movement observations] the crescent moon was above the horizon. Therefore, the meeting determined the first day of Syawal 1443 Hijrah corresponding to May 2, 2022,” Yaqut told a press conference.

He said that the new moon was sighted throughout 99 designated points across the country, where the height of the thinnest crescent moon was at 4 degrees and 0.59 minutes.
The confirmation meeting was done by two methods namely astronomical calculations and lunar movement observations. “The two methods complement each other, not contradicted,” he added.
“Hopefully, with the results of this meeting, all Muslims in Indonesia can celebrate Eid al-Fitr together and reflect the unity of Muslims in Indonesia and look forward to a better future as a nation,” said Yaqut.
