JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo spoke by phone with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Thursday, April 28, an official confirmed.
“The two heads of state have spoken on the phone on Thursday evening,” Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah said on Friday, April 29.
The Russian President’s official website stated that the telephone conversation was at the initiative of the Indonesian side.
The leaders discussed Russian-Indonesian interaction and various aspects of the G20’s activities in view of Jakarta’s presidency in the Group.
At Jokowi’s request, Putin outlined Russia’s assessment of the situation in Ukraine concerning the ongoing special military operation. The leaders also agreed on further contacts.
Spoke on the phone with Ukraine’s Zelenskyy
A day earlier, Jokowi also spoke on the phone with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
This was announced by the Indonesian President on the @jokowi Twitter handle on Thursday, April 28. “Yesterday, I spoke to President @ZelenskyyUa of Ukraine. I reiterated Indonesia’s support to any efforts for peace negotiations to succeed and stand ready to provide humanitarian assistance,” Jokowi wrote.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy also said on his official Twitter account that he had spoken with Jokowi. “Had talks with President @jokowi. Thanked for the support of sovereignty and territorial integrity, in particular for a clear position in the UN Food security issues were discussed. Appreciate inviting me to the @g20org summit,” Zelenskyy wrote.
He expressed his gratitude for Indonesia’s support to Ukraine for its sovereignty and territorial integrity. President Zelenskyy also expressed appreciation for Jokowi’s invitation for Ukraine to attend the G20 meeting.
