Indonesian Envoy to India Dies of Covid-19

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indonesian Embassy in India, Ferdy Nico Yohannes Piay, has died after contracting Covid-19. He was 47.

“He has died of Covid-19,” State News Antara quoted a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Teuku Faizasyah on Wednesday, May 26.

Ferdy’s death was also announced by the Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi in the @KBRI_NewDelhi Twitter handle on Wednesday morning.

“Your leadership, exemplary service, and kind heart during the assignment in India will forever be remembered,” the embassy said.

Before his assignment in India, Ferdy served as the ministry’s director for South and Central Asian Affairs. Throughout his career in the Foreign Service, his tours of duty were previously in Australia and the Netherlands.

Media reported that as of May 26, India’s Covid-19 caseload reached more than 27 million with over 311,000 deaths.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recorded that as of May 26, the number of Indonesian citizens who tested positive for Covid-19 in India was 133 with 121 recoveries. Nine others are in stable condition as they are currently treated. Three Indonesians have died of coronavirus.
