The latter eventually found the submarine split in three at a depth of 853 meters, well below its maximum depth of 500 meters. The Indonesian Navy confirmed that the vessel was sunk, and its 53 man crew died in the line of duty.

Indonesian SAR units are also searching for the men’s remains to evacuate them to Surabaya.
