Woman Behind the Flavor of Indonesia's Most Famous Instant Noodle Passes Away

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The creator of many flavors of Indonesia's famous Indomie instant noodle, Nunuk Nuraini, passed away on Wednesday, January 27 at 14.55 pm. She was 59. 

The news of her death was first announced on the @lailadimyati Twitter handle. Nunuk is called by netizens as "my hero" because of her legendary fried noodle flavor. 

Later, Indofood's Head of Public Relations, Nurlita Novi Arlaida, confirmed the news of Nunuk's death.

"Nunuk Nuraini died today [Wednesday] and her soul returned peacefully to God," Novi told Kompas.com on Wednesday.

Deep sorrow

This heartsick news not only makes family and relatives sad but also thousands of instant noodle fans. In the first upload of Nunuk's death, Twitter users flooded the comments with condolence messages.

Nunuk Nuraini was rarely exposed. The public began to recognize her a few years ago during the launch of a new variant of Indomie. Generous with her time and talents, Nunuk served for almost 30 years as the flavor development manager for Indofood, the company that produces Indomie.

Condolence message was also conveyed by the Human Resource Division of Indofood, Agus Suprapta.

"Hopefully, all her sins will be forgiven and she is in the nicest place in heaven now. And for the family will be given the strength," said Agus in a statement.

Her outstanding merit

During her lifetime, Nunuk played an important role in the discovery of new variants of Indomie flavor. To date, Indomie has dozens of different flavors, such as geprek chicken (smashed chicken), chicken curry, rendang (spicy meat dish), and special soup flavors.

Indomie now has many factories in various countries, from Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Syria, to Egypt.

Indomie has also been named one of the best instant noodles in the world. In the release of 25 best instant ramen according to the Los Angeles Times in 2019, there are two mainstay flavors of Indomie.

Nunuk is now remembered as the “hero” for students who save on food expenses, as the title was previously given by West Java Governor, Ridwan Kamil, on his Instagram post in 2017.
