Indonesia Highlights: Indonesia Condemns West Papua Separatist Declaration | Indonesian Police Arrest Individual for Spreading Appeal for Jihad | Indonesian Labor Minister Ida Fauziyah Tests Positive for Covid-19

December 4, 2020, 03.44 AM

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesia’s ongoing fight against separatism in Papua and West Papua shows no signs of abating, since Jakarta annexed the territory in 1963.

West Papuan independence activist Benny Wenda proved this, as his declaration of a provisional government for West Papua ruffled feathers in the Indonesian capital, not least the country’s national security tsar Mahfud MD.

Indonesian netizens might want to beware of Indonesia’s draconian Electronic Information and Transaction Law [UU ITE], or recent tensions between the authorities and Muslim militants in Central Sulawesi and the Islamic Defenders Front before they share content on social media.

A man in East Jakarta’s Cakung district learned this the hard way, when the Jakarta Metropolitan Police arrested him for uploading a video calling for a jihad.

And the Covid-19 pandemic is affecting the highest levels of Indonesia’s government, as Labor Minister Ida Fauziah becomes the fourth minister in President Joko Widodo’s cabinet to contract the coronavirus. Read on for more of these stories:

1. Indonesia Condemns West Papua Separatist Declaration

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD condemned West Papuan independence activist Benny Wenda’s for forming a so-called provisional government, on grounds that the move “constitutes treason [towards Indonesia].”

“Benny’s declaration for a West Papuan government is delusional, as it does not meet the conditions to establish a state, like a permanent population, territory, and government,” he said on Thursday, December 3.

Mahfud also noted that Benny “does not represent [the West Papuan] people, his territory is occupied by Indonesia, and he did not get international recognition from other countries,” and
ordered the Indonesian National Police to arrest him for breaching national security.
But the Indonesian National Police is less rash, as spokesman Brigadier General Awi Setiyono pointed out that “Benny Wenda…is a British citizen who resides there.”

In the document, Benny rejected Indonesian laws and policies as he vowed to fight what he called “Indonesian colonization” of West Papua since 1963.

2. Indonesian Police Arrest Individual for Spreading Appeal for Jihad
The Indonesian National Police used the Electronic Information and Transaction Law [UU ITE], as well as its own ongoing fight against radicalism, to nab a man in East Jakarta’s Cakung district for sharng a video on Jihad that went viral.

“The suspect, who was identified as H, forwarded a video of [a Muslim call to prayer] on the Instagram account @hashophasan, which belonged to his brother,” said Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesman Police Chief Commissioner Yusri Yunus on Thursday, 3 December.

“In the video, the phrase calling for prayer was replaced with a call for jihad. That said, we are still trying to determine the motives behind H’s actions.”

Speaking in his capacity as chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council or DMI, 2-time former Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla condemned the insertion for the call for jihad. “The call for jihad in the video can be misinterpreted as a call for violence in the name of Islam,” he said.

“Mosques should not be used as a medium to promote violence against other religions. If that was allowed, then it would lead to incidents such as the recent attack in Sigi, Central Sulawesi that left a family of four dead.”

If found guilty, H faces up to six years in jail for his stunt.

3. Indonesian Labor Minister Ida Fauziyah Tests Positive for Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo’s cabinet, after Labor Minister Ida Fauziyah has become the latest official to test positive for the illness.

Ida herself confirmed the diagnosis. “A PCR test I took earlier this week came back positive for Covid-19,” she said in a text message on Thursday, December 3. “I am still in good physical condition, and currently (self)-isolating to avoid transmitting (Covid-19) to others.”

Ida is Jokowi’s fourth minister to contract Covid-19. Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi was the first minister to test positive for the coronavirus, followed by former Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Edhy Prabowo and Religious Affairs Minister Fachrul Razi.

The pandemic also affected regional heads throughout Indonesia. Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and his deputy Ahmad Riza Patria recently tested positive for Covid-19.

The Governor of Riau Province Syamsuar also contracted the coronavirus, as did Isdianto, the Governor of the neighboring Riau Islands Province. Central Kalimantan Governor Sugianto Sabran rounded out this list.
