The Best Yogyakarta Food Eateries for a Bowl of Indonesian ‘Bakso’

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Although the Indonesian food of ‘Bakso’ is not necessarily synonymous with Yogyakarta, the Central Java city has some of the best local food eateries to try the dish.

Bakso is Indonesian Meatball Soup that is best enjoyed during a rainy or cool day and with a side of traditional chips on the side.

There are many ways to enjoy this comfort food and there is also an abundance of vendors selling this comfort food in Jogja.

1. Bakso Ironayan Pak Jam

For residents of Bantul and the surrounding area of Gunungkidul, Pak Jam’s version of Indonesian Meatball Soup takes the cake.

Its popularity is well-known in the area thanks to its rich broth and perfectly springy meatballs, but better yet, it only costs $0.82 (Rp 12,000) a portion.

To have your share of this national delicacy, stop by Ironayan which is south of Ngipik Market from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

2. Bakso Klenger Ratu Sari

To add a bit more fun to enjoy your bowl of warm meatball soup, the owners of this Yogyakarta food eatery sells a 20-kilogram Bakso.

At this Jogja food stall, customers can choose from jumbo-sized, super jumbo-sized, or normal-sized meatballs, and depending on the size and quantity, you could end up paying millions of Indonesian Rupiah for a portion or two.

To try this unique Central Javan gem, you can visit Jalan Wahid Hasyim Nomor 296 from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.

3. Bakso Urat dan Es Serut “Iceshiteru”

This Yogyakarta food stall sells a bowl of warm meatball soup as well as traditional ice dishes to assist in your dessert search.

A portion at this food stall starts from $1.30 (Rp 19,000) which you can try at Selokan Mataram or east of the Cha Cha Milk Tea stall from 1 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

4. Bakso Kuwah Selera Anda

Make your way to Kidul City Hall to try this highly popular Yogyakarta food stall for only $0.55 (Rp 8,000) a portion of Bakso.

It is so famous that there is always a long queue forming before you get a chance to indulge in this classic Indonesian food dish.

Unlike most Indonesian Meatball Soup vendors, customers can choose which types of meatball and other main ingredients go into their meal.
