Macron also defended Charlie Hebdo’s reprinting of the offensive cartoon last September, on grounds that they are exercising their freedom of expression. But his defense did not cut much ice with Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi Widodo.
“Freedoms of expression that dishonor the sanctity and symbols of any religion cannot be justified and must stop. Linking religion to terrorism is a big mistake,” Jokowi said last Saturday, October 31.
He also condemned Paty’s murder and a subsequent attack in the southern French city of Nice. “Terrorism is terrorism, terrorists are terrorists, terrorism has nothing to do with religion.” A Tunisian refugee carried out the Nice attack, which killed four people.
