“The traditional Sumba village is surrounded by stone fences. There is an alley before entering the village, but it is too narrow for a vehicle to pass through,” said Daud.

“They currently need help,” he said.

Head of West Sumba Disaster Mitigation Agency Yanis Lubalu said basic relief assistance has been distributed to the affected families. The 21 families, Yanis said, have been provided with rice, instant noodles, tarpaulins, and traditional mats.

“If we looked at the condition last night, they panicked. So they ran away with whatever they could carry from theire houses. The rest was burned down,” Yanis told Kompas.com on Tuesday, August 11.
