Indonesian Naval Vessel KRI Teluk Jakarta Sinks near Kangean Island in East Java

KOMPAS.com – An Indonesian naval vessel KRI Teluk Jakarta 541 sank about 90 meters under the sea in Masalembo near Kangean Island in East Java Tuesday, July 14.

According to Antara news agency, Navy spokesperson First Admiral Mohammad Zaenal said the incident took place around 9:00am and no casualty was reported.

“All 55 crew onboard are safe,” Zaenal said.

“The waves reached between 2.5 and 4 meters in height during the incident,”  Tribunnews.com quoted Zaenal as saying.

It is reported that the landing fleet warship was carrying out a naval support operation to transport logistics to the east.

The 54 crew were rescued by a nearby KM Tanto Sejahtera, while one crew got help from KM Dobonsolo, a ship belonging to the state-owned ship operator PT Pelni.
