Ministry of Transportation Set to Launch Covid-19 Tracking App

June 9, 2020, 05.29 PM

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Greater Jakarta Transportation Management Body (BPTJ) of the Ministry of Transportation is set to release its 'Track Covid-19' (L-Cov) app for Android users.

The L-Cov app was designed with the general public and public transportation operators in mind.

Scheduled for release on 10 June, the app can be downloaded on the Google Play Store. The surveillance app is the byproduct of a partnership with the National Covid-19 Task Force.

The app is poised to ease public concerns about the spread of the Covid-19 virus in Indonesia which stands at 33,076 total cases as of 9 June.

Although Indonesia has not slowed down the spread of the virus, parts of the country have eased lockdown restrictions including the capital of Jakarta.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in May, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan announced that the Jakarta Provincial Government had been tracking potential Covid-19 cases since 6 January.

The rapid spread of the virus in Jakarta has become difficult for the government to track thus raising public concerns about the number of undetected cases.

Based on government data for 9 June, Jakarta has the highest number of new Covid-19 cases with 232 infected people. The capital city also has 66 community units (RW) that are classified as red zones.

To use the L-Cov app, users are required to register and provide details such as their name, mobile number, and place of residence.

L-Cov will require users to conduct a self-diagnosis assessment based on a set of questions regarding symptoms, travel history, and contact of history with Covid-19 positive individuals.

The information gathered from the self-diagnosis assessment will be used to determine whether an individual carries the potential of the Covid-19 virus.

Daily updates on active Covid-19 cases in Indonesia will also be provided through the app. L-Cov will also notify the user which areas are deemed red zones.

The app is further enhanced with a tracking feature.

“Through the Tracking Functionality feature, users will be informed on the potential spread of the Covid-19 virus in real-time based on the route the user takes,” explains Head of BPTJ Polana B. Pramesti during a press conference.

BPTJ’s Polana hopes that the app offers convenience to users, particularly those who regularly use public transportation, in monitoring the spread of the virus as they go about their daily life. (Writer: Walda Marison | Editor: Irfan Maullana)
