Century-Old Nahdlatul Ulama Signifies New Awakening, Says Indonesia President

February 7, 2023, 09.39 PM

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said the century-old existence of Nahdlatul Ulama, one of the largest Muslim groups in Indonesia, can be seen as the sign of a new awakening to strengthen the Islamic faith and the nation.

“We hope the momentum of NU’s centennial celebration will mark a new awakening of the organization, strengthen Islamic faith and Indonesia, as well as improve the people’s prosperity and realize an advanced future for Indonesia,” Jokowi told the participants attending the ceremony at the Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo, East Java on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

The President also extended his appreciation for NU's tireless contribution to the nation, hoping the organization would be better over time.

"Entering its second century [of establishment], God Willing, NU will be stronger, be an example of moderate Islam who live with good Islamic etiquette, uphold good behavior and the values of eastern culture, ethics, and tolerance, as well as unity, mutual assistance, and continue following the development," Jokowi said.

As one of the largest Muslim organizations, Jokowi believes that NU should increase its contribution to reaching the international level to benefit the global community.

"The government appreciates NU's efforts to contribute to developing a better and esteemed global civilization," the President said.

NU's contribution to maintaining people's resilience in challenging times, such as during the Covid-19 pandemic and the intrusion from radical and extremist groups, has also been proven, he added.

"Amid the wave of changes, NU must be in the front line to assess the current development, new technology, and economic transformation, as well as to maintain equitable and dignified social order," Jokowi said.

He also expressed optimism that educational institutions operated by NU would prepare young nahdliyin (NU followers) to be literate in science and technology, master digital technology, and grow as advanced professionals.

"I also hope that NU would embrace and be attentive to members of the younger generation to ensure that they will remain committed to the principle of ahl as-sunnah wal-jamaah [to live by the example of the Prophet and the companions] traditions and ethics, and will continue mastering science and technology," he said.
