JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The newly-inaugurated Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the Indonesian city of Solo in Central Java is a symbol of the brotherhood between the people of Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"This mosque will serve as a symbol of brotherhood, a symbol of friendship between the people of Indonesia and the UAE," Indonesia’s President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said in a televised message via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Monday, Nov. 14.

Jokowi and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, popularly known as MBZ, inaugurated the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Banjarsari sub-district, Surakarta, Central Java, on Monday morning.
The inauguration of the mosque took place amid the Indonesian President's busy schedule ahead of the G20 Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali.
Both leaders arrived at the mosque at 7:25 am local time, followed by a tour of the mosque and a short prayer.
Jokowi and MBZ then walked to the mosque's front yard to sign a plaque and plant a tree together.
They spent some time greeting the residents gathered on the mosque’s grounds.
Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as well as UAE representatives and Muslim figures, attended the mosque's opening ceremony.
